The neat thing about science fiction is that sometimes it becomes science fact. Back in the 1960’s, when the captain of the star ship Enterprise, James T. Kirk, needed to telecommunicate, all he had to do was flip open a palm sized black clam shell device and start talking, sound familiar? Of course there are some basic differences, to the best of my knowledge you can’t use a Star Trek communicator to send pictures of your wang to an ex-girlfriend, but you have to admit its pretty close.

When Star Trek debuted in the 1960′s it exposed people all around the world to a bright future full of high tech gadgets. 45 Years, 6 different television series and 11 movies later, Star Trek has undoubtedly had a large impact on the world around us, inspiring scientist  and inventors to develop the technology that shaped their childhood. has taken a look at some of the technology in Star Trek and how close we are to having that technology in every day life.

Oh sure, Star Trek may have predicted tablet computers and swanky jumpsuits, but why don’t I have sexy green dancing girls? come on, it’s the 21st century, damn it. Daddy wants to get his green freak on…

Oh yea, the infographic’s after the jump.
