Last night the ABC Upfronts were held in where the network officially announces their fall line-up. Making appearances were both Joss Whedon and Clark Gregg promoting their newly signed series, Agents of SHIELD. You may have heard of it, it’s been a hot topic as of late. At the presentation Whedon made a few witty comments about the series and how it all came to be. Deadline reports,
“Last spring, [Disney top executive] Bob Iger sent us some bonus footage from The Avengers, with a simple question, ‘Is there a show here?” said ABC president Paul Lee. Reports say, Iger saw the Marvel short Item 47 and the impression it left on Disney’s CEO was the genesis for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Standing on stage before the media at the ABC Upfront Joss Whedon began, “I’ll be brief. I was born…,” to a smattering of chuckles that then turned into widespread laughter when he quickly deadpanned, “I wasn’t born. I was grown in a lab… and fed on Marvel Comics — and that turned out OK for me.” Whedon kept the presentation moving, stating that “[The Avengers] worked because everyone felt included, ” and said that he hopes to bring that same sense of inclusion to the new television show. On actor Clark Gregg, Whedon couldn’t resist another joke, saying Gregg’s “an actor so talented even I couldn’t kill him [so] I built S.H.I.E.L.D. around him.”
Just can’t keep a good agent down, can ya? Entertainment Weekly snagged Gregg for a quick interview where they asked him about just that, how Coulson survives?
I thought they were pranking me a little bit because there was so much blood on the set of The Avengers. I kept waiting to see, are we going to shoot a version where [Loki] misses? And they didn’t, so I was really surprised to get that call and I wanted to make sure it didn’t do anything to undermine what we achieved there and when [writer-director Joss Whedon] explained the mystery and how they planned to deal with it, with Agent Coulson being around, I was very sold.
He’s back. He’s thinks he knows how he’s back. We’ll have to see.
SHIELD co-star Chloe Bennet added,
If you love The Avengers, if you love any of Joss Whedon’s work, you’re going to absolutely love the show. It’s about these people living in a super world dealing with being human. You see these superhero movies and you see the superheroes struggle but you don’t see how humans do in a world like that. That’s what will draw people in. It’s so human. And it’s so super and awesome still.
I don’t think I’m making any bold claims saying this show is going to be HUGELY popular. Coulson’s popularity alone will likely sustain them for a season, and from there, who knows!? Whedon wowed us all with The Avengers, but I like to think he’s at his best with a television series where more time can be spent with the characters. Are you totally pumped for Agents of SHIELD? I am!
Agents of SHIELD will air Tuesday nights at 8pm on ABC this fall.
