There once was a movie called Explorers. It was okay. But some people fell in love with it and it now rests in happy places with such 80s children’s classics as The Goonies and The Neverending Story. Today brings news that fans of the original may consider a signal of the impending apocalypse (and not the fun, zombie-filled kind). For the powers-that-be have deemed it is the proper time to remake this old property.
The new version of Explorers shall be produced by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (the writers behind Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol). Geoff Moore and Dave Posamentier (Better Living Through Chemistry) will be in charge of the script. So far, no director is attached.
If you haven’t seen the original Explorers, head off and give it a watch. It’s basically a story about three kids that build their own spaceship and go – duh – exploring. It also happens to be the debut movie for both Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. All-in-all, it’s not as bad as people made it out to be (despite the limited budget and rushed ending).
So what do the Nerd Readers think about this? Is it time for a new Explorers? Can they do the original story justice now that they have more money and more time? Or this just another remake that doesn’t need to happen?
Thanks to Hollywood Reporter for the heads-up.
