After a rocky couple of months, it seems that the Ant-Man movie is back on track. Sure, they’ve lost a much loved and popular director, and accusations of studio tinkering have been running rampant, but with July’s annual orgy for all things nerdy just a few weeks away, now’s not the time for doubt. Now’s the time for hype! In Ant-Man news today, we learned that the first, great film of Marvel Studios third phase will be taking part in this year’s San Diego Comic Con festivities, and that if you think you look like you can pass for a young Michael Douglas, then there might a great job for you.
First up, yes, Ant-Man will be returning to San Diego Comic Con. Marvel showed some test footage shot by original Ant-Man director Edgar Wright two years, but with shooting on the film underway in Atlanta soon, this will be a serious effort to generate hype for the film. What makes us say that? Well, it looks like Marvel is bring Hank Pym to the con.
Douglas, the man playing Pym in the film, revealed to Collider (via Screen Rant) that yes indeed, he will be in Hall H on Saturday July 26 to help bring Ant-Man to the masses. There’s no word on whether or not he’ll be joined by co-star Paul Rudd or director Peyton Reed, but it’s doubtful that they’d send Douglas to San Diego alone. Has Michael Douglas ever been to Comic Con? Nevertheless, Douglas seems enthusiastic. “Yeah! I’m going to Comic-Con,” he said. “I’m even dragging my son. I promised I’m taking him out of camp.”
In more serious news, Douglas addressed the departure of Wright from the film and expressed his own disappointment that he wouldn’t be working with the Shaun of the Dead director:
“Yeah, he’s a wonderful talent. It was very disappointing, yeah. It was a big disappointment and more so for him because he had a lot of years invested and he was really the one initially who got them to even consider it, you know, the screenplay that he wrote. I’m not the producer on it and I’m an actor for hire, and, you know, Marvel certainly has a pretty amazing track record, rightly or wrongly, so I think it just was that kind of combination where although they like the idea of the individual and somebody with Edgar’s individual spirit and everything, maybe just collided with an operation – I think they’re all on relatively decent terms.”
In the meantime, do you look like this guy?
That’s how Douglas appeared on the hit 1970s police series The Streets of San Francisco. It’s relevant because Marvel Studios is presently casting for an actor that looks like a young Michael Douglas. Actually, that picture is too young, they’re looking for a more iconic Douglas. Like how he appeared in 1987’s Wall Street…
There we go. Using the casting website Backstage, Marvel is on the look out for someone who can play the younger version of Hank Pym, and they will need to bare more than a slight resemblance to Douglas “circa Wall Street, Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction.” Otherwise, the specifications called for someone male, ages 30-45, and Caucasian. The casting call classifies this as a “Photo Double: (Background / Extra)” role. Cinema Blend presumes that this could mean the role for the young Pym is substantive, but it could mean just the opposite, and they don’t want to spend the time and effort to de-age Douglas through CG for what maybe some kind of flashback or montage.
We’ll have more Ant-Man news as it develops, and Nerd Bastards will be delivering all kinds of Comic Con coverage with the festivities get underway July 23.
