JJ Murphy, who recently took on the role of Ser Denys Mallister in the hit television show ‘Game Of Thrones’ has passed away at age 86. In the books, the character of Ser Denys has commanded the Shadow Tower of the Night’s Watch for 33 years and is a candidate for Lord Commander. He is the eldest living crow and Murphy was expected to shoot more scenes in the role for season 5 of the smash HBO series. The actor’s other film credits include ‘Angela’s Ashes’ and 2014’s ‘Dracula Untold.’ The latter film is a big budget project shot in Northern Ireland, in which Murphy played a “village elder.” More inside about the late actor and on what ‘Game Of Thrones’ plans to do with the character of Mallister.

Close friends of the actor said he was “excited” to be working on the blockbuster show. His film work was relatively meager, but as a classically trained theater actor, he is well-known and remembered for his time at the Belfast’s Lyric Theatre. He began his career 0n Northern Ireland stages in the late 1940’s. Those who knew and worked with the Belfast native had nothing but praise for his integrity and professionalism.

Actress Maggie Cronin said of Mr Murphy: “His passion for theatre, for the welfare and betterment of actors and those who worked in the performing arts was always there. It was an integral part of the man.”

Writer Damian Gorman, who worked with Mr Murphy, said: “He was a lovely man and a lovely actor.”

Director Paula McFetridge of Belfast’s Kabosh Theatre Company tweeted: “He was a great actor and a gentleman.”

Murphy’s agent Philip Young also released a statement regarding Murphy’s death, saying “I have never encountered a man with more spirit, passion and love for his craft.”

It’s not yet known what the producers will do next, but Mallister’s contributions to the TV series will no doubt just be re-written. Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss released a statement mourning the passing of the senior player, and told Us Weekly: “We will not be recasting J.J. Murphy. He was a lovely man, and the best Denys Mallister we could have hoped for. And now his watch is ended.”
