Before he becomes the next James Bond, Idris Elba is returning to a character that helped cement his celebrity. I was pretty late to the Luther party, only having just finished the third season on Netflix last month. If you haven’t seen Luther yet, I highly recommend it. Most fans thought that would be it for Luther after the third season as Elba moved on to bigger movie roles, but luckily the BBC is working on a two-part special and Idris Elba is already back on set to bring us more later this year.
The special was written by Luther creator Neil Cross (Crossbones) and will be directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed). Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley are also back as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk. Joining the cast are Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Downtown Abbey), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Inbetweeners Movie), Darren Boyd (Fortitude, Spy), John Heffernan (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) and Patrick Malahide (Indian Summers).
Executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff said:
It’s very exciting to have Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther, and to be in East London shooting the show’s fourth installment. Neil Cross has pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest, scariest story yet and it’s a privilege to welcome such a glittering array of acting talent to our already stellar cast.
Here’s what we know about the synopsis so far:
Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, Luther is drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he’s ever been.
You’ve got plenty of time to binge watch the three seasons of Luther to get ready for the two-part special later this year. I say binge watch because once you start, you’ll want to keep going.
