To recap, Kevin Smith had a whole series of movies lined up for the next couple of years, and then he floated the idea of revisiting his second film, Mallrats, in a sequel. He did it via Twitter, so naturally everyone took the tease as gospel and ran with it past Excitedville all the way to Hype City. Maybe it’s our relentless obsession with nostalgia, or maybe it’s the stars aligning on the 20th anniversary of the original film, but Smith just couldn’t stop talking about Mallrats 2. The latest development: we will no longer have to wait two years for it! In a new post, Smith conformed that Mallrats 2 will be his next project.
To be fair, the story Smith related in the latest edition of the Hollywood Babble-On podcast has more to do with logistics than hype, but let’s be honest, the hype can’t possibly hurt.
We’ve been putting together Mallrats 2….It’s been a real, like Blues Brothers ‘We’re putting the band back together, on a mission from Smod. So this week, we had a lot of activity behind the scenes as well and it looks like we might — it’s Mallrats and so we require a big old empty mall, and it would be nice if we could do things to the mall. So if you had a mall and the mall was eventually going away, that would let you like blow the f—ing mall up, which happens in the third act. So we found a place that we can go to and in order to get to that mall before it goes away, we were talking about initially shooting Clerks 3 this summer and then we were going to get to Mallrats in the beginning of 2016. And then it jumped into 2015, where we were going to shoot Clerks and then hopefully Mallrats before the end of the year. But now, based on a f—ing mall that we all dig that will be going away, the priority has become Mallrats. So the next f—ing movie I’m making is Mallrats 2. No word on Batfleck yet…but it would be fun to see if we could get him.
So there you have it, now you know how Mallrats 2 ends. Unless Smith is joking, of course, which I wouldn’t put it past him.
You do have to admire how quickly this has all come together though. It wasn’t even a month ago that Smith first mentioned the idea, and now Mallrats 2 is fairly ready to go with nearly all the original film’s main cast – Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Jason Mewes, Ethan Suplee, Joey Lauren Adams and Michael Rooker – signed up to return. Even Stan Lee is onboard for a cameo reprise. Claire Forlani is still a question mark, and as you read above, Ben “Batfleck” Affleck maybe tough to schedule on short notice, but from the sound of things, this is good to go.
On the other hand, this pushes back Clerks 3, which has hit more bumps in the road on its way to movies screens. Smith’s next Canadian-themed horror movie Moose Jaws will be set back even further.
So Mallrats 2 is happening. Soon. Are you excited? (It’s okay to say no.)
