Olivia Munn Cast As Psylocke In X-Men: Apocalypse

Director Byran Singer shared this afternoon that he has cast Olivia Munn as Elizabeth Braddock aka Psylocke for his upcoming film, X-Men: Apocalypse.  Psylocke is a powerful precognitive ninja with heightened empathy, telekinisis, telepathy and mother-fraking psychic katanas!  She’s bold, she’s beautiful, and she is dangerous!  There’s also been more incarnations of her than almost any other X-Men on the roster!  Inquiring minds want to know, what version will we see in this latest film?

The news came via Singer’s instagram account, much in the way of how we learned of Jubilee’s casting last month.  If Munn looks familiar, it’s because she’s had smaller roles in hits like Magic Mike, and Iron-Man 2.

Munn’s turn as Braddock marks her first forray into the X-Men universe, but not Psylocke’s – we previously saw her portrayed by Mei Melançon in X-Men: Last Stand.  Many hardcore X-Men fans have already cried continuity foul at what is appearing to be retconned versions of both Angel and Jubilee, but Betsy the British badass is a true 1980’s icon of the era! How will Singer address this latest discrepency born out of Last Stand? At this point we hope his plan is to buy every single DVD and Blu-ray copy, hide them in a closet, and pretend the film never happened.

There is so much source material, Singer can really pick from the cream of the crop when it comes to Psylocke.  She has a very well known history with characters like Wolverine and Deadpool, but perhaps most notable is her long on-again-off-again relationship with Warren Worthington aka Angel/Archangel.

Given Worthington’s prominence in the Age of Apocalypse storyline, we’re guessing there could be connections between the two characters explored in the film.  Queue the Evanescense music videos!

Like Jubilee, Psylocke was a part of the recent X-Men comic book run from 2013 that saw the first time an all-female team was assembled under Storm’s leadership.  One of the more interesting dynamics was between her and fellow psychic Rachel Summers, a thread we’re hoping gets picked up with Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey in Age of Apocalypse instead.

Munn just starred alongside Johnny Depp in Mortdecai, and Deliver Us From Evil.  She’s currently filming Ride Along 2, starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart slated for release next year.

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to be released on May 27th, 2016.
