In the current TV climate, a spin-off combining characters from The Flash and Arrow in a new show is about as close to a sure thing as you can get. It was a few months ago that the CW first floated the possibility of another show to take place in this small screen DC Comics-universe, which if Supergirl also has tendrils to Arrow et al would make four series part of the same superhero universe on the air. This new CW series though is a bit less straightforward than tagging a new hero and creating a show around them, it’s taking parts from other shows and creating a new series. Kind of Legendary, wouldn’t you say?
Yes, according to an article in Variety that discussed the new fall shows currently in the pipe, the spin-off is referred to as Legends of Tomorrow. Sounds like some kind of sci-fi serial from the 30s, or perhaps it’s a reference to the time traveler character Rip Hunter being played by Arthur Darvill in the series. Or, it could be a reference to the recent comic book series Legends of the DC Universe, which was an anthology series featuring various characters from around the DC Universe, which makes sense given that the show will bring together The Atom, one-half of Firestorm, Hawkgirl, and a couple of Flash rogues.
This is not the first time the word “Legends” has been associated with the show. At Cape Comic Con over the weekend, John Wesley Shipp, who plays Barry Allen’s father Henry on The Flash, used the word “Legends” when talking about the show to fans.
In addition to the name game, rumors are circling that the show will be picked up officially next month and go straight-to-series with a 13 episode order and a midseason launch date. Since the series was announced there’s been speculation that the show might be Agent Carter‘ed and used to bridge the gap between two halves of a season for either Flash or Arrow. Might that be the plan? Or perhaps this so-called Legends of Tomorrow will be some kind of summer series, like the CW’s Beauty and the Beast seems to have become. Nothing’s for certain at the moment.
Legends of Tomorrow starring Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Ciara Renee, Arthur Darvill and Victor Garber is expected to be a part of the CW schedule for the 2015/16 TV season. We’ll find out for certain when that schedule is announced on May 14.
