Valiant Entertainment and Sony Pictures have teamed up for a five-picture deal involving the Bloodshot and Harbinger comic series respectively, set to kick off in 2017 with Bloodshot. The schematics seem to be two Bloodshot films, 2 Harbinger films, and then a crossover film called Harbinger Wars. Not much is known about the Harbinger films directorial-wise as of yet, but in the Bloodshot corner, we have the creative combo of David Leitch and Chad Stahelski; the two previously teamed up in 2014 for John Wick. (A moment of silence, please, for Daisy the beagle.) Eric Heisserer (known for 2011’s The Thing) will work the scripts for both.
Other known names on team Bloodshot are Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) along with Heisserer on the script, and Matthew Vaughn and Jason Kothari as executive producers.
Although once one of the most popular Valiant comics, it’s okay if you need a little refresher course on who Bloodshot is. Also known as Angelo Mortalli, Bloodshot is a former solder and pretty much a Wolverine/Punisher hybrid kind of guy. Project Rising Spirit, a secret government agency, brought Bloodshot back from the dead and injected nanites into his blood, giving him powers of regeneration and meta-morphing. His memory has been wiped numerous times, although he doesn’t know why or by whom.
Needless to say, he’s out for vengeance.
It seems like combining comic universes is the go-to formula of the moment; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? If the Bloodshot films look at all similar stylistically to John Wick, viewers may find themselves in for a dark, action-packed thrill ride.
