Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are bringing back the world’s smartest dog and his boy Sherman back to the small screen. That’s right, Mr. Peabody and Sherman may have tanked at the box office as a 3D animated film, but Netflix and DreamWorks Animation are taking another shot at the subject using 2D animation much more like the original four-minute shorts that were part of the 1960’s cartoon program The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.

The new series, The New Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show, will premiere October 9th with 13, 30 minute episodes. Peabody and Sherman will be hosts of a late night comedy show shot in their Manhattan penthouse which will include a live animated studio audience. Of course the show will use the WABAC machine to bring guests that will include some of histories greatest people, Napoleon, Motzart, etc.

Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live) is voicing Mr. Peabody and Max Charles (American Sniper), who voiced Sherman in the ill-fated box office disaster is back as Sherman.

Will this do any better than the Inspector Gadget series? ONe hopeful note is that Dave Smith, who has worked on a lot of great shows, directing The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed television movie and shows like Steven’s Universe, Amazing World of Gumball and Dexter’s Laboratory.

The love I have for Jay Ward and his creations, and his comedic tone, have been an inspiration for me ever since I was a kid.
