Groot makes it very clear that he is Groot- but what does it mean to be Groot? Marvel Entertainment takes us a step closer to understanding with the new two-part origins clip they released from Disney XD’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series.

Narrated by Rocket, thankfully, the clips show us a young Groot doing some fight training with an older Groot, possibly his father. Young Groot gets overwhelmed and seemingly gives up at one point, where the older Groot comforts him by explaining how they’re all descendants of one single seed called the World Pod. This seems to enlighten young Groot, but the touching moment is short lived. The first clip ends with Ronan the Accuser threatening the Groots’ planet.

The second clip starts off as all the Groots band together, and Ronan, not one to tolerate resistance, hurls a giant ball of fire from his ship. The Groots stand their ground, as our young Groot runs back to save the World Pod from being destroyed. Groot grabs the pod as the attack collapses the structure around him, sending him falling into the water. He emerges to find his home, and the pod, destroyed. All is seemingly lost until Groot starts glowing- a reminder that the Groot race is safe while one Groot remains alive. Looters sent by Ronan happen upon our lone Groot, and, not knowing what to make of him, shove him in a cage. His cage happens to be next to another cage- full of some very familiar looking raccoons.

Disney XD will be premiering the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series on September 26th at 9:30 PM ET, with two back-to-back episodes. You can catch a sneak preview of the first episode on September 5th, 9 PM ET.
