SDCC16: “Buckaroo Banzai” Moving In With Amazon

Earlier this year Clerks creator Kevin Smith spoke on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast, saying that “weird doors” started to open after his episode of The Flash aired. And apparently one of those weird doors led to a meeting with MGM and into talks about turning the cult flick The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension into a TV series. And if the rumors are true, the Banzai TV series may soon have found a landing bay with the quickly growing streaming giant Amazon. MGM and Amazon are rumored to be close to locking down a deal which would bring W.D. Richter and Earl Mac Rauch‘s 1984 cult classic sci-fi adventure comedy to the small screen.

The original film was about the impossibly talented Dr. Buckaroo Banzai who was a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock star (busy man), who, with the help of the Hong Kong Cavaliers worked to save the world by defeating a band of inter-dimensional aliens called Red Lectroids from Planet 10. Despite the years, the film has continued to grow in popularity. Which no doubt contributed to the making of a TV show over thirty years later.

Smith has already revealed how he intends to approach the show:

“Basically, you just do the entire movie for season one, and then season two you finally do the sequel we’ve all dreamed about; Buckaroo Banzai Versus the World Crime League. So we went back and forth and before you know it, we were in business together. We finished this deal to develop Buckaroo Banzai, and in the next month, we take it out and try to find a home for it. These cats are very good at finding homes for things, so if all goes well, I think we’ll be doing Buckaroo Banzai as a series.”

He’s also revealed that he’d like to see the original movie cast, including Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, and Jeff Goldblum make appearances as a way to both honor the movie and to pass the torch to the new cast. No information yet on if any of the cast have agreed to make appearances.

Amazon has been busy at Comic-Con this year with a setup that includes model sets and life size characters from Thunderbirds Are Go, as well as a 3D virtual experience and props and costumes from The Main in the High Castle, which will be available to visit at the times below.
