In real life, Johnny Depp‘s had some problems lately, the most recent being a court battle with a former business manager that accuses Depp of being a spend-thrift who’s wildly loose with his own cash. When life gets you down, dress like a pirate apparently. That’s what Depp did last week when he payed a surprise visit to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland dressed as his Pirates of the Caribbean movie series character Captain Jack Sparrow to entertain visitors to the park. Naturally, pandemonium ensued because everybody still loves Captain Jack when he’s doing his Captain Jack thing.
Now this wasn’t purely about Depp bringing the spirit of fun and adventure to fans, of course there’s also a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie to promote. Dead Men Tell No Tales from Kon-Tiki directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning will be in theatres later this month, but Disneyland visitors got their Captain Jack fix last week, and while you might have seen the bad smartphone video version of this, the below video is the smartly-produced, high-quality Disney promotional version. Shall we now take a look at the hijinks?
Depp did something similar to this last year as the Mad Hatter to promote Alice Through the Looking Glass, and that extra little bit of effort did absolutely nothing to prevent the Alice sequel from being a box office disaster. Obviously, Disney’s hoping that the shine of Pirates isn’t that far off the mark; the previous Pirates film, On Stranger Tides, made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and Disney thinks they’re primed for an encore. We’ll have to wait until at least May 26 to know for certain…
