Everyone seemed super happy to have Game of Thrones back on their airwaves (and internet tubes) Sunday night, but that happiness turned to rage when Arya Stark came upon a group of Lannister soldiers encamped and one of them was revealed to be Ed Sheeran. Many logged their disgust on social media within seconds of this appearance of the hit radio icon who dared sully the sanctity of Thrones with his… something, and was that one of his latest hits he was singing? Terrible! Poor Ed Sheeran. What did he do to deserve your ire? Especially since the appearance was meant as a nice gesture to one of the Thrones‘ cast members.
Genius News leant some insight on how Sheeran came to find himself conscripted into the Lannister army, and evidently it was done as a surprise for Arya Stark’s portrayer, and Ed Sheeran super-fan, Maisie Williams. That was nice of the production, wasn’t it? As for the song, blame George R.R. Martin. He wrote it for the Song of Fire and Ice novel A Storm of Swords, and it’s loaded with potentially Lannister-related metaphors and allusions. So internet, you’ve done nothing but digitally eviscerate a good natured English crooner that was doing something nice for a famous fan. I hope your proud of yourselves…
“[I’m] a bit surprised that people have made that much fuss about it… he looks right in the show; he fits into the fabric of the show,” said the episode’s director Jeremy Podeswa in an interview with the Daily Beast. “If you didn’t know that he was a pop star or an entertainer of any kind, you would think he’s just one of the guys. He’s been acting for a little while; he takes it very seriously.”
Sheeran has since deleted his Twitter account.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 pm on HBO.
