It’s been months since there’s been any substantial news regarding Captain Marvel, the first female solo film outta Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. But today, as one might have assumed they would, Marvel gave a little something something during their panel at San Diego Comic Con. And by a little something, we’re talking an unexpected (and legally confounding) alien race, as well an interesting timeline in the MCU.

At SDCC today, Marvel announced that Captain Marvel will be set in the early 1990s, before the events of the first Iron Man. It wasn’t set was part of the 90’s but let’s all assume it’ll be during the height of Hanson (the band), Steven Madden shoes, and hacky sacks.

By far the biggest surprise, is the films villains. Yes, villains. A whole alien race of them. It’ll be… THE SKRULLS!!!

Who the deuce are The Skrulls? The Skrulls are a fictional race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters. The Skrulls have been regularly featured in several decades of Marvel Comics, usually as villains bent on invading Earth and engaged in a prolonged war with the extraterrestrial Kree (the blue skinned people as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy).

It’s interesting to see that Marvel can make use of The Skrulls considering that they are mostly part of The Fantastic Four, which FOX owns the movie licensing to (one of the reasons they were Chitauri in Avengers was because of rights belonging to FOX). The deeper legality of these shared rights we’ll undoubtedly make for a blog post all its own when details emerge. Just as well as fan speculation on what this could mean for Avengers: Infinity War 1+2 and beyond.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also confirmed that Nick Fury is going to have a presence in the film – with both eyes still intact (10$ says Fury loses his eye in this movie.)

As announced in July 2016, Brie Larson is set to play Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), and the film is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
