When Johnny Depp created the persona of Captain Jack Sparrow in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, his inspiration was a rock and roll pirate in the mood of Rolling Stones’ member Keith Richards. Richards then returned the compliment by appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, as Keeper of the Code Captain Teague, who also happened to be Jack’s father. But Richards is about to be joined in the Pirates franchise with another member of rock royalty, and now you can see Sir Paul McCartney is full pirate mode, as he’ll appear in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Sir Paul released the image on his Twitter feed over the weekend.

So that’s pretty much how you would expect Paul McCartney to look in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. You’ll note a definite visual reference back to Captain Jack with the bandana and the braids, and since we know from the trailers that there will be a prologue or some other flashback to a younger Jack Sparrow, might it be possible that McCartney plays some sort of mentor figure to Jack? Presently, McCartney is merely credited as “Jail Guard 2” on the Dead Men Tell No Tales IMDb page, but is such an anonymous part befitting for a former Beatle? Hardly. Expect there to be some kind of twist with McCartney’s role, and we’ll just have to wait and see…
In the meantime, it’s worth noting that McCartney, and indeed the entirety of the Beatles, have had previous nautical experience.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be in theatres everywhere on May 26.
