The strange weird wonderful journey of Blade Runner 2, or Untitled Blade Runner Sequel if you like, continues. First its announcement came out of nowhere more than 30 years after the original’s release, then Ridley Scott stepped down as director and handed the reins over to Denis Villeneuve, and then there was all that release date Musical Chairs… Today though, we’re here to talk about an interesting casting announcement. You may not have heard about Sylvia Hoeks, but the Blade Runner 2 production has and they have cast the Dutch actress in what they’re calling “a leading role” in the sequel.

“Sylvia is a radiant talent, a tremendous actress with great appeal in a wide variety of roles,” said Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson in a press release. “Her addition to this vastly accomplished international cast is a perfect fit.”

And that cast now includes Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas and Harrison Ford, who will be returning to the world of Blade Runner as supposed replicant Rick Deckard. The screenplay, written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, will take place several decades after the original film, and now you know everything we do about the sequel.

Hoeks has an impressive resume, but not one that will be familiar to most American moviegoers. She won the equivalent of the Oscar in the Netherlands for her breakthrough role in Duska, and then starred in Het Meisje en de Dood (The Girl and Death), The Storm, The Best Offer, and Tirza, the Dutch submission for Best Foreign Language film at the Academy Awards in 2011.

Blade Runner 2 will begin filming this summer for a October 6, 2017 release.
