Way back in 2000, it seemed like there was a world of possibility in video game movies. Sure there were some stinkers – Super Mario Bros. starring a British thespian and Double Dragon with Scott Wolf – but video gaming was a growing, profitable business with lots of fans who should have been theoretically eager to see their favourite games brought to life on the big screen. Well, we’re older and wiser now, but we can’t seem to stop ourselves from trying to make video game movies a thing, and next year we’ll try again with a new Tomb Raider starring the Academy Award winning actress from The Danish Girl

Above is a new photo from the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, and below is new commentary from Lara Croft herself, Alicia Vikander, about what fans can expect from the new film, and from Croft herself.

“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience,” Vikander said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”

“Beginning” is relative because the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 1.0 we see the film is a tremendous human specimen in terms of fitness and athleticism, and Vikander had to whip herself into better shape in order to make the grade. “For one action scene, we used the London venue for Olympic rafting,” she said with a laugh, according to EW. “They threw me down that river — with my hands tied — about 50 times. I didn’t need to act, just react!”

You will get a chance to react to Vikander’s work as Lara Croft when Tomb Raider opens in theatres everywhere on March 16, 2018.
