Get ready to celebrate The X-Files like it’s 1995! There’s tremendous excitement over the short, six-episode revival of the show set to premiere on Fox in January, and there’s been no shortage of coverage on this site and others about all the ins and outs and expectations of those half-dozen episodes. Now there’s this: might this X-Files miniseries be a beachhead meant to launch something more ongoing? Like an all-new X-Files ongoing series starring two of the new characters being introduced in the Mulder and Scully-centric limited series? Seems like perfect synergy, but don’t but your money on a new X-Files dynasty just yet.

TVLine is reporting that a new X-Files series featuring Robbie Amell (The Flash) and Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) is being considered by X-Files creator Chris Carter and Fox. Amell and Ambrose are playing new characters named Miller and Einstein in the six-episode reboot, and they are only described so far as being “alien hunting agents.” What exactly that means, is uncertain, are they FBI agents? Are they new Syndicate? Who can say, but what is known is that Amell and Ambrose do not have a caveat in their contracts for a “series deal beyond” those six-episodes, so this would be a new deal.

While this is a nice rumor, and certainly Amell and Ambrose are certainly a talented and photogenic pair to build a supernatural series around, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First of all, who knows how the people will respond to the return of The X-Files. Will it be a smash success, or will it fizzle out? Early buzz says that this is X-Files in prime form, but will the ratings be there? Also, The X-Files has tried before to do The X-Files with a pair not named David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, namely Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish, but the experiment ended up having no popular support, and the show was cancelled before it became the Doggett and Reyes show. I guess we’ll see how fans react to Miller and Einstein…

The X-Files returns on January 24, 2016 on Fox.
