Hold on Attack on Titan fans, there’s a live action movie on the way! Hajime Isayama‘s manga has been riding a huge wave of popularity this year, it’s the second highest selling Manga series in 2013 with almost 16 million copies sold. When can we expect to see it on the big screen? The website for Attack on Titan announced today that a live action movie is in development and looking to begin filming in 2014 with a 2015 release date. Shinji Higuchi (Neon Genesis Evangelion storyboard artist) is set to direct. His background is in SFX directing where he worked on the Gamera movies.

Yuusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Gantz) is tackling the scripting chores. No word on any casting yet although it was reported to have begun the process.

If you’re not sure what the hell we’re talking about, there is a 25-episode anime adaptation that you can track down on the Internet. Here’s the sub-titled opening credits for the show.

Funimation is set to release the series on DVD and Blue Ray in 2014. If you can’t wait, you can find it in the dark back alleys of the Internet or at that table at the next SciFi convention you attend. You know that table, the one with all the DVDs with photo-copied covers and shaky movie copies.

The table that everyone in charge ignores and those desperate to find an out-of-print copy or never released video that no one can get their hands on eventually end up at. They should put your purchase in a brown paper bag . . .
