Pryde’s Picks 5/7/14 – Comic Book Reviews

1

Holy geek-weekend hangover, Batman. Between the blue paint (I dressed up as Mystique) and loads of free comics, I barely made it out of Free Comic Book Day alive. This week, I took all your comments into consideration and focused less on the big boys and more on titles from Image and Darkhorse. Sit back and enjoy your comic book balance breakfast, courtesy of Pryde’s Picks.

This week, Marvel throws you on a roller coaster ride of emotions when they bring back Miles Morales and kill The Watcher. DC’s Batman titles fall more than a little short and Aquaman has me wondering why the hell anyone would care about him. Image stole the show this week with their unique and amazing titles Alex + Ada, Rat Queens and Nailbiter.  (more…)

Thanks for taking a break from your chocolate bunny induced comas to join me for our weekly dose of geek rage. I want to apologize for this week’s completely Marvel and DC pull. The tops dogs had too much out to ignore so the indie books got dropped. I hope you can forgive me. Next week, I’ll try to make it up to you.

Marvel had me bored and confused with their Ultimate Fantastic Four and their handful of X-Men books. Their only saving grace this week was a relatively satisfying final issue of Superior Spider-man. DC tried to trick me into liking them by bringing my guilty pleasure The Metal Men into the Forever Evil story arc. They further seduced me with two delicious issues of Batman that left me wondering just how far Bruce Wayne will go for his boy Gordon?  (more…)

Convention hangovers are the worst. Upon returning home you realize you left any bit of self dignity you had on the bathroom floor with that Furry Sonic the Hedgehog suit or… maybe that’s just me? Megacon is over and after many hot showers I’m back to my old comic raging self. Lets spin dash to the good stuff already! (more…)

I don’t know about you all but I’m sick of the renumbering of books and the reboots. Instead of changing book numbers to get new readers in, why don’t the big boys just title/number their story arcs? (more…)

Happy belated Valentine’s Day everyone! I can’t believe I’m going to say this but DC Comics won me over this week. Marvel NOW! just seems to be a gross re-numbering of their books to get people to pick up imaginary issue #1’s. DC really treated me like a lady this holiday and I plan on returning the favor… (more…)

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you’d think Marvel would be working harder at wooing me. Instead, they’re dropping the ball with most of their issue #1s. At least DC is putting in some effort of greasing my sexy wheels by announcing an unusual Lex Luthor casting in Batman vs Superman. I’m interested to see what Jessie Eisenberg can do with the character and beyond excited to see Jeremy Irons as Alfred. Never in my life did I expect Scar to be Batman’s #1 man servant! Enough moviespeak, lets get this thing started. (more…)

Holy busy movie newsweek, Batman! It looks like the epic Batman/Superman crossover is being pushed back to 2016. Michael Douglas is brushing off the stripper glitter from Last Vegas and joining the cast of Ant-Man as Hank Pym. Just when we think we’ve been overloaded with geek news, Wizards of the Coast announces that 20th Century Fox has the rights to adapt a Magic: The Gathering movie But let’s talk comics shall we? With movie rumors flying rampant on the internet, it’s hard to know what is in store for some of my favorite franchises. The idea of simplifying Wonder Woman‘s origin may make sense on paper but elicits much fury in the hearts of true fans. Some are saying Chris Evans’ diva-like attitude might have Marvel wanting to replace him after Captain America: The Winter Solder (bullshit). I’m just happy these outrageous rumors are purely speculative at the moment. But enough of all that, let’s talk comics. (more…)

It’s a New Year and with it comes MORE FN_Pryde! Pryde’s Picks is back and full of raucous rageful opinions! My holiday hiatus was too long lived and I’ve just missed y’all way too much to stay away. Pryde’s Picks will be keeping a weekly schedule so you’ll be able to find me here on Nerdbastards EVERY Saturday with more comic book goodness!

I really hoped Marvel would start the year strong but this week’s pull was lackluster and the only thing worth reading came from Guardians of the Galaxy. DC Comics is working hard to win it’s way into my heart with this week’s Injustice Gods Among Us and Batman the Dark Knight. Much to my HUGE surprise, Darkhorse Comics won this week with a new book they have called Bad Blood. Get your year started right, neck deep in some really great comics! (more…)
