The preview trailer for the newly announced Batman: Arkham Knight hit yesterday, and it was siiiick. Heck, my Bat nipples were beaming in excitement…and I wasn’t even wearing my Batsuit. Coming off the 3rd, mediocre installment (if you take it as expanded game play to Arkham City and not a new game, it’s not that bad), it’s with much delight to see franchise back in the hands of Rock Steady Studios; the makers of first two titles in the critically acclaimed series. That, and Kevin Conroy will be back to voice (the only true voice) Batman! Between Conroy, Rocksteady and the absolutely stunning cinematics shown in the trailer,  justifying spending 700$ on a new console just got a whole lot easier.

Since the trailer broke, a barrage of of details and images have surfaced. One update in particular could change Batman canon as we know it…

Taking place just one year after the events of Arkham City, the plot of the game will see a Gotham that has come under siege from many of Batman’s famous villains including Two-Face, Penguin, Harley Quinn, and Scarecrow, but also a new face. Arkham Knight is not just the title of the game, but also a brand new villain is being added to Batman’s rogues gallery of baddies. Rocksteady has reportedly been working with DC’s Geoff Johns to create the new character.

“We hadn’t in the previous games introduced someone new to the universe,” game director Sefton Hill said. “We wanted to introduce someone who could really challenge Batman to go head to head with him in lots of different ways. We’re not talking about those ways just yet but this guy is definitely a formidable foe for Batman.”

New character, huh? That’s awfully fucking ballsy. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that the Arkham Knight is a twisted crazed version of Batman/Bruce Wayne. The voice at the start of the trailer sounds like an evil Conroy. Could be cool, seeing two versions of Batman; one fighting for Gotham and the other for Arkham. Or it could be lame. Or I could be completely wrong and Arkham Knight is something even more crazed and fucked up. Regardless, the promise of a new character and new possibilities, as it applies to Batman mythos, is just darn exciting.

The excitement doesn’t stop there. The world of Gotham is getting bigger, a whole lot bigger. The Gotham we see in Arkham Knight will be taking place on three different islands throughout the city which the developer says is five times larger than Arkham City. Hot damn! Worried about having to take long zip lines across the city? No worries at all. Not when your riding around in the Batmobile!

YES! Finally, after 3 games we can make use out of Batman’s slick ride. The Batmobile is the biggest addition to the gameplay of Arkham Knight, and something Rocksteady isn’t taking lightly.

We wanted to make the best car in any game ever,” Hill said. “That was our mission statement right from the start.”

Holy hot wheels Batman! Being able to get around the city as if it were something out of Grand Theft Auto is the freshest and most exciting thing they could offer to this franchise.

Now, my bursting exuberance aside,  I’m afraid that they might get repetitive with the gameplay. It was a great jump from the first one to the second one because it included the free world, but the rinse wash and repeat manner in taking out goons before clearing a room has gotten real old. I hope the Bat mobile is not the only NEW thing they introduce.

I think after this game comes out, we are going to be arguing over which trilogy is better, the Nolan trilogy or the Rocksteady trilogy. For me, it’s not even a question. Rocksteady gets Batman like us fans get Batman. Nolan did his thing and it was good but it was still his own thing. Aside from Batman: The Animated Series, not iteration has done it finer than Rocksteady.

Oh before you go new images have emerged from GameInformer’s latest issue, featuring Riddler, Barbara Gordon, The Penguin, Two Face and a image that’s either a new Bat suit or the mysterious Arkham Knight.
