Battlestar Galactica, the short-lived, but much loved tv series, only lasted a year, but it left a large impact upon its fans.  An entire franchise grew out of the original show’s ashes, including books, comics, boardgames, video games, and a miniseries that led to a 2004 reboot.   Ever since the last episode of the new series aired in 2009, there has been talk of a film adaptation.  Clearly, nothing has come of Universal Studios‘ best laid plans.  However, the project finally has some producers tied to it, so the Galactica and her crew may actually make it to the big screen sometime in the near future.

The franchise, created by Greg A. Larson, centered on the heroic crew aboard the starship Galactica.  Along with other starships, the Galactica carried humanity’s last survivors.  Intelligent machines called Cylons have been wiping out the humans on various planets across the galaxy, and only a few are left.  The show is the one that put the Sci-Fi channel on the map (yes, before it became Syfy).  It was critically acclaimed, with Time even calling it the best show on television in 2005.  The legions of fans have been waiting for a continuation since it left the air in 2009.  Now, they may finally get their wish.

Michael De LucaScott Stuber and Dylan Clark have been announced as producers for the film adaptation, although no writer is currently attached to the project.  De Luca’s credits include American History X, The Social Network, Fifty Shades of Grey and Captain Phillips.  Stuber is known for Ted and Role Models.  Clark’s Bluegrass Films is responsible for Ted 2 and is currently in production on the Boston Marathon bombing film Patriot’s Day.  With a mix like that, there is certainly some hope for the film.  Producers familiar with comedy, drama, and action are well suited for a film of this caliber.  Now if only there were a writer or director signed on.  Bryan Singer of X-Men fame has been linked to the project before, but with his plate already full to the brim, it is not certain he is still on board.

Keep your eyes and ears open for more news!  We’ve been teased before, but it looks like this time the project is gathering some momentum.
