The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley)-1

If you are talking about Iron Man 3, you are likely discussing either that sweet “House Party Protocol” scene or you’re talking about Sir Ben Kingsley ’s portrayal of The Mandarin.  If you haven’t seen Iron Man 3 yet, or the Marvel One Shot, “All Hail The King”, you may want to turn away now to avoid some pretty big spoilers. Otherwise, get ready to start contemplating the identity of Iron Man 3’s big baddie.

While making the rounds promoting his upcoming film, The Boxtrolls, Sir Ben Kingsley was asked by IGN if Marvel fans could expect to see his Trevor Slattery on screen again.  His cryptic answer?

[Audiences may] always see Trevor in whatever figure.  So, it’s up to the powers that be to decide whether or not they’d want to introduce Trevor, whether or not they’d want to reintroduce the Mandarin.

Fans will remember that the big twist at the end of Iron Man 3 was that The Mandarin was simply an actor by the name of Trevor Slattery who was hired to play The Mandarin.  Plenty of people were justifiably miffed by this development.  Others understood the stray from comic book canon, as The Mandarin is a very hard figure to bring to screen while remaining true to the source material.  No matter which side of that argument you fall on, it is undeniable that Kingsley brought something wonderful to the role, a role that he revisited in the All Hail The King one shot attached to the Thor: The Dark World home releases.  Here’s a short teaser for that one if you happened to miss it.

So, how can Marvel make fans happy with their treatment of The Mandarin?  Kingsley has a thought on that one.

Has the Mandarin invented Trevor, or has Trevor invented the Mandarin? Which is which?” Kingsley asks. “The Mandarin could be so supremely intelligent that he could have said, ‘You know what? I’ll invent this actor, and he will be my mask.’ You know, which is which? Who’s pulling the strings. Now, this is me just free-thinking here, but I would love to revisit that world. But Trev, bless him, may have made an indelible mark on that world. So everyone might say, ‘Is it Trev under there?’ So they’d have to approach it quite carefully, and so would I, but I would love to go back to that world, yeah.

Obviously, Kingsley’s desire to take the character further may produce absolutely nothing.  However, it is also possible that he knows the fate of his character but is choosing to remain mum on the subject.  Either way, fans would love to see more of Kingsley in the MCU. Hey, Marvel! Are you listening?
