We had Fede Alvarez’s critically acclaimed remake back in 2013 that certainly didn’t hold back in terms of the amount of gore and blood that was used during production. Supposedly they used 50,000 gallons of blood for the final scene alone, but the somber and serious tone took away from the heart of the original trilogy. There was also a certain character – and thus so, lack of one-liners – missing from the movie. So, the news that Starz have greenlit the long-awaited follow-up to the classic film franchise The Evil Dead has us very excited indeed. If there is two words to some up how we are feeling, then they would be “Groovy Baby.’
The series will reunite the Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, their longtime producing partner Rob Tapers and star Bruce Campbell. So there is no doubt about it that the talent is there, and we can only hope they deliver the goods. The series, which will be titled ‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’, will consist of 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging Lothario and Chansaw-Handed Monster, who has spent the last 30 years in hiding, avoiding responsibility from the terrors of the Evil Dead. Ash is eventually forced to face his demons – both personal and literal – when a Deadite plague threatens to destroy mankind. Unfortunately for Ash, destiny has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.
“Starz first worked with Sam and Rob on ‘Spartacus,’ and we are thrilled to be back in business with them,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “With Sam writing and directing and Bruce Campbell returning to the screen, we are certain the show will give Evil Dead fans around the world the fix they’ve been craving.”
Sam Raimi has already spoke about how he is looking forward to returning to the franchise:
“Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it.”
Bruce Campbell has said he is also excited to be part of the series, …and it should also be duly noted that he mentions:
“it’s going to be everything the …[fans] have been clamoring for: serious deadite ass-kicking and plenty of outrageous humor.”
With Rob Tapers adding:
“STARZ has always been a great creative partner and we are excited to be working with them on this project.”
It certainly sounds like it is a project that they have been dying to sink their teeth into (sorry, …had to be done!).
Raimi is taking the directors seat for the pilot, which he is co-writing with his brother Ivan Raimi (Darkman, Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), Tom Spezialy (Chuck, Reaper, Desperate Housewives) will also help with script duties. Raimi is on board as executive producer with both, Tapert and Campbell and Ivan Raimi will co-executive produce alongside Aaron Lam (Spartacus) who will produce.
The original Evil Dead, is a classic horror tale that follows Ash and a group of his friends as they retreat to a cabin in the woods, and unknowingly release demons intent on possessing the living. The film was made on a small budget and was an international success regarded by some critics as one of the best horror movies of all time. It spawned two successful sequels, video games, comic books and a 2013 reboot that grossed $97 million worldwide.
Ash Vs. Evil Dead project was packaged by CAA and Craig Jacobson at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller. Marta Fernandez will serve as the executive in charge at STARZ.
We will all be ‘hailing to the king’ when the series airs on STARZ in 2015.
