Earlier last month, fans learned that Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Johnson were the first two stars cast in the film adaptation of The New Mutants. At the beginning of the week, news broke that Rosario Dawson would be taking on the mentor role of Dr. Ceilia Reyes. And now, today, THR is reporting that Charlie Heaton has been cast as Cannonball. More after the jump.

Samuel Guthrie, aka Cannonball, is the eldest of a very big Kentucky mining family who discovered his powers after he and another miner had become trapped deep within a cave. He has the ability to create heated energy from any part of his body. when focused, this energy can be used to propel him through the air at very high speeds and heights. And because he’s able to generate the energy from any part of his body, he has great control over his maneuverability in the air.

Cannonball is one of the founding members of The New Mutants as well as one of only a few mutants with a southern origin. He would later go on to help form X-Force and become second in command of that group.

His ability also allows him to create a shield around himself. And although he has the strength of a normal human being, he’s able to lift heavy objects by propelling his arms or legs. He is also able to extend his blast shield to encompass others and protect them from any additional harm.

Charlie Heaton being cast as Cannonball should be good news for fans of the franchise. Heaton, as some of you may know, was last seen on the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things where he played Will Byers’ older brother Jonathan. So playing and elder sibling should come naturally for him. Other than that, his resume is rather short which is usually a good sign for things to come. Of course, it could also lead to terrible things due to a lack of experience. But for the most part, relative unknowns have been known to produce quality work.

If his acting in Strangers Things is any sign of what to expect, then fans shouldn’t worry at all.
