suicide squad

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have a lot of faith in their upcoming film Suicide Squad. After the mixed reactions Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received, they really don’t have any other choice. If the studio wants to show they are able to compete against the superhero juggernaut that is Disney/Marvel Studios, then this August’s release has to be successful at the box office. Those on the outside may think Warner Bros. is premature in planning a DC Extended Universe (DCEU) consisting of more films, but what it truly reveals about the studio is that they haven’t given up. They will continue to move forward as if Suicide Squad and subsequent releases are hits at the theaters. With that being said it should come as no surprise that rumors are circulating that they intend on creating more solo spinoffs out of this cadre of criminals. So exactly who gets the spotlight in their own feature?

Earlier this month the word got out that the studio intends of featuring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in her own flick. Talks of a female cast including Batgirl and the Birds of Prey to make an appearance has also been attached to that project. Robbie has also impressed a lot of fans and studio execs on her portrayal of Harley that is certainly helping in gaining attention and interest in the all-villain film.

Early reviews of Suicide Squad have been quite positive which might just translate as a win for the studio. But who would spinoff other than Harley?

This rumor of spinoffs from Suicide Squad came from We Got This Covered which cited a source close to Warner Bros. and who is privy to their plans for the DCEU. According to the source:

“They’re going to do a sequel for sure, and the recently announced spinoff with Margot Robbie has got everyone excited, too, but their plans don’t end there. The studio is feeling very confident in the property. They think it’s going to be a really big hit and they think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters.

I’ve heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up.

The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come.”

With this not being confirmed by the studio, realize that some (or all) of these spinoffs may not see the light of. Had Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fared a little better and received greater praise, then there probably wouldn’t be this trepidation on behalf at Warner Bros. in locking down future release dates for solo projects. When it’s all said and done, Suicide Squad looks to be the diving rod which will lead the studio and DC Entertainment down the path of success and strong competition for Disney/Marvel, or will be a major setback in establishing this cinematic universe of some of comic books’ greatest characters.
