I guess I wasn’t aware this news had been confirmed, last I heard parts of the BBC were still denying a Doctor Who movie. But if director David Yates is out there talking about looking for writers it must be happening.

When it was announced about two weeks ago the Harry Potter directer had his sights on directing a new, fresh take on the 900+ year old Time Lord most of the internet freaked out. And rightly so, Doctor Who has enjoyed an amazing resurgence since the series returned in 2005. Most people in the U.S. never had a clue who the Doctor was. They might have had memories of Tom Baker running around with that ridiculously long scarf on PBS, but they weren’t really familiar with the show. Since the series restarted Doctor Who has only gained popularity with every new regeneration.

All right, so maybe it is time for a Who movie. The franchise is literally exploding across the pop culture scene and the highly anticipated 50th anniversary is only two years away. But, I mean, which Doctor to focus on? Will any of the current cast of actors or other involved creative talent be used? How can they possibly think about doing Who without the involvement of Steven Moffat or Russel T. Davies?

MTV’s Kara Warner tracked Yates down at the red carpet for the BAFTA Los Angeles 2011 Britannia Awards to see what he had to say for himself,

I can’t really talk about that because its such a long way away. We’re principally looking for a writer, and we’ll start with that. Everything has to start with a great script, so that’s more important than [casting].

It’s such a wonderful character and such a wonderful world. It’s exciting.

It’s a long journey and we’re going to take our time with it. Right now I’m looking forward to a vacation, frankly!

All I’m saying Yates, is you’ll have hundreds of intense Doctor Who fans breathing down your neck the entire time. So, you know, don’t fuck this up. No pressure or anything.

I’ve lived with pressure for so long. What’s pressure? I don’t know anymore! It’s fine, it’s good.

You can watch the whole interview here,

What do you think would make a good Doctor Who movie? I’m thinking an origin story could be neat. It’s something rarely explored and it wouldn’t be stepping on the series toes at all.
