Kids love remakes, right? That seems to be one of the prevailing philosophies of modern Hollywood movie-making lately, but here’s a riddle for you: When is a remake not a remake? Apparently in the case of Jumanji, the new version – not reboot – of the 1995 Joe Johnston film. We know that the film will star the Central Intelligence duo of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, but Johnson wants you to know that when you see the film, he will most assuredly not be playing the character played by Robin Williams in the original. On top of that, Johnson promised that he and the production will make something that honors the late actor too.

Johnson posted the follow message on Instagram:

“An important thing that I want to be honest and bring up is Robin Williams. The love and respect I have for this man is boundless. You have my word, we will honor his name and the character of ‘Alan Parrish’ will stand alone and be forever immortalized in the world of JUMANJI in an earnest and cool way. I have an idea of what to do and I think his family will be proud. I also think Robin is somewhere lookin’ down and laughing, remembering the first time we met backstage and I (for the first time ever) was a star struck bumbling idiot that couldn’t even get my words out. Idiot. He literally calmed me down w/ that smile and laugh. But that’s for another fun story down the road.”

That’s good news for a lot of people worried that this Jumanji was going to walk over the memory of Williams in what was one of his most successful films. Fans know that Johnson throws a lot of heart (no pun intended) into his projects, so when he talks about his love and respect for Robin Williams, you know he means it. Still, it’s doubtful that Johnson’s words will have any effect on those that still think this non-remake/maybe-sequel/sorta-continuation is inadvisable.

Jumanji will hopefully start shooting soon, it’s got a July 28, 2017 release date.
