In 2006, Sylvester Stallone reinvigorated one of his signature characters by making Rocky Balboa, the sixth in a series of Rocky movies about the championship boxer from Philly. He followed that up in 2008 with a new movie about his other legendary character, Vietnam veteran John Rambo in the simply titled Rambo. With new found box office success for the Rocky-inspired Creed, in which Stallone is getting Oscar buzz for his reprise as Balboa, naturally, we have breaking news that’s Rambo related. Sources are saying that a new series focusing on Rambo and his never-before-heard-of son might soon be coming to Fox.

According to Deadline, Fox has closed a deal with Rambo rights holders Entertainment One and Nu Image/Millenium Films to develop a new series based on the character created David Morrell in his novel First Blood, and became the main character in four Rambo movies. The series will be called Rambo: New Blood and will explore “the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL. J.R.”

Stallone is onboard as an executive producer along with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive), who’s developed the series as head writer, but the real question now is to what degree will Stallone be a regular fixture in terms of acting on New Blood? As the logline implies, this is a father/son story, so the father will likely have to be a regular presence. It implies that Stallone will be regular on the series as opposed to, say, Bradley Cooper and his participation on Limitless in which he’s appeared on only two episodes out of 10 aired so far. Either Stallone will appear in a majority of episodes but not all, or the series will have a shortened episode order than the standard network 22. Fox did something similar for Kevin Bacon and The Following, which produced only 15 or 16 episodes in each or its three seasons.

Rambo: New Blood is one of a number of movie-based TV projects in development at Fox including Lethal Weapon, Think Like A Man and Behind Enemy Lines. Will it make it onto the air, and how much will Stallone be involved in terms of acting? We’ll have more news as it becomes available.
