One of the true breakout characters from Captain America: Civil War was Black Panther. Actor Chadwick Boseman completely nailed that character, and King T’Challa had one of the best character arcs during the entertaining film. As a result, general interest in Black Panther has increased exponentially. We already know that Marvel has a planned Black Panther solo film coming in 2018, and now casting is ramping up for the film. Creed director Ryan Coogler has already been confirmed as the director for the film. Yesterday it was announced that 12 Years a Slave Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to join as a possible love interest for the film. The cast continues to grow and so far these are great choices.

It has just been confirmed that Actor Michael B. Jordan will also be joining the cast for the Black Panther film. The actor has an extensive resume which includes such films as Red Tails, Chronicle, Fruitvale Station, and Creed. On the small screen, Jordan had an extensive run on Friday Night Lights as well as a few other roles, including The Wire. Jordan recently joined the cast of MGM’s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, which will be produced by Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo. While Jordan’s role has not yet been known, sources claim that he will possibly be the villain against Chadwick Boseman.

Michael B Jordan Ryan Coogler

This will be the third time that Jordan teams up with director Ryan Coogler, so it’s safe to say the two have a great working relationship.  The two worked together previously for Fruitvale Station and for the Rocky spin-off Creed.  Jordan played the lead for both of those films.  Coogler has stated on many occasions that Jordan is a phenomenal actor and he wants to work with him as much as possible.  It’s a no-brainer that Coogler probably wanted Jordan in the film in some capacity.

This also means that a sequel to Fox’s Fantastic Four remake is pretty much dead in the water.  The film was a critical and commercial failure with a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  Jordan would not be the first Human Torch who left Fox to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).  Before he was Captain America, Chris Evan also played the role of Johnny Storm and he left and joined the MCU for better opportunities.

It will also be interesting to see Jordan fulfil the “bad guy” role since most of his films he has always played straight and narrow roles.  Who could Jordan be playing in the Black Panther film?  Could he be playing M’Baku aka “Man-Ape?” Could he be playing T’Challa’s adoptive brother Hunter aka “White Wolf?”  Could he be playing N’Jadaka who tried a coup against T’Challa to take over Wakanda?  With 50 years of source material, the possibilities are endless.
