Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. It is the fifteenth film installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also the third installment to Phase Three. It is set to be released May 5, 2017. It is, arguably, the most anticipated films slated in MCU pipeline. And why not, the first one was a perfect comic book movie! It truly was one of the most unique and delightful films Marvel has created to date. Featuring memorable and enjoyable characters, filled with all the required thrills and spills, and was a almost nonstop barrage of humor and fun. It was like eating a big mac and a large fry at 2am after a night of drunken debauchery, it was that good that good. So… a sequel? Yes, please!

While the May 5th 2017 release date feels oh so far away, there is plenty GOTG news and happenings to keep fans abuzz. We’ve gathered some recent commentary from director James Gunn. An audition tape featuring Christ Pratt and Bautista. Karen Gillan and Zoe Saldana feeling blue + green…. and MORE!!!

Peter Quill, or Star Lord (Chris Pratt) as he likes to call himself, is a quick-witted man of Earth thrown into the far reaches of galaxy, who has stolen an artifact that everyone seems to want. By accident he stumbles upon four other characters, Gamora the assassin (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) the enhanced raccoon and Groot (Vin Diesel) the humanoid tree, and the five of them form an unlikely team.

Each one of these roles was brilliantly cast, right from the get go. This is evident in a recent audition tape that has surfaced featuring Chris Pratt and Bautista trying out an early scene. The performers act out the moment early in the film when Drax has hold of Gamora. Watch it below:

On the topic of just how well this movie was cast, comes the role of Groot – played by Vin Diesel. Why was such a big name star cast to utter only three (okay, five!) words throughout the film? Because no one else could do it like Diesel.

In a recent Facebook live chat, director James Gunn took questions from fans, and a fan decided to make a remark about Vin Diesel’s seemingly easy voice job. A Facebook user by the name of Caleb sent Gunn a comment claiming that anyone can do Diesel’s job and voice Groot. Little did “Caleb” know he was going to strike a nerve! “That’s bulls—!” Gunn quipped after reading the comment.

“I did the voice for Groot and we had other people do the voice for Groot,” the director went on. “We had all sorts of people doing the voice for Groot, and Groot didn’t come alive until Vin [Diesel] did the voice for Groot. Vin is amazing as Groot. I’ll argue to the death with anyone that says he doesn’t make a difference or it’s a small role. It’s huge what he does for us.” Diesel really does have family everywhere.

If you think Gunn is protective about his characters and the actors who portray them, check out what he has to say about how Zoe Saldana’s character Gamora is being represented in GOTG merchandise; and what he thinks its important to see character like her exposed more.

In the same Facebook live chat, one fan asked him if Gamora’s representation in merchandise (toys, clothing, costumes..etc) for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will get treated better this time around (products featuring her were scarce the first go around). Gunn took the opportunity to get serious, saying:

“I had a big conversation about this yesterday with one of my producer’s at Marvel about trying to make sure, especially that Gamora is represented more in stuff and all the Guardians toys but especially all the clothing and bedsheets and all that stuff. I think its really important. That often times it’s something Marvel is concerned with, as I am. It’s frustrating and stuff and it bums me out.”

Fair female representation in merchandise is a hot button topic right now, largely in thanks to some of seemingly seclusion of female heroes in toys lines like Hasbro. It’s great to see someone as influential as Gunn talk about this issue, bring awareness to it, and push for butt-kicking babes to be made available to both girls and boys.

Speaking of Gamora, actress Zoe Saldana recently tweeted a photo of her superhero make up regimen. And she wasn’t the only one either. Karen Gillan, who will be returning as Gamora’s villainous sister, Nebula, took to same prosthetic prep.

These lovely ladies are getting ready for another go round. How about you?

I’ll I can say is, it’s going to be a long next year and a half until the films release. All these goodies, and we still don’t know what characters are officially returning (though its safe to assume everyone is coming back), what new characters are in store, or what the story is going to be.

You want to know more? You’ll just have to wait until May 2017 when Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits theaters everywhere. Or stay tuned to Nerd Bastards for updates.
