The Guardians Of The Galaxy has always been an ecclectic comic, and it sure as hell looks like an eccentric movie. Few of us have read through those pages and thought “I bet ‘Addicted To Love‘ would fit in great during this aerial dog-fight.” This is a series that intrinsically begs for Weird Al Yankovich and They Might Be Giants on its soundtrack. Yet neither are anywhere to be found.

How does one bed grooves under a space Ent participating in a prison break? Exactly what is “Music To Fight Raccoons By?” The premise of the comic is ridiculous and the writers knew this when they created it. And that’s what made it so fun for so many years. It’s one thing to attach voices to characters that personify ‘weird,’ and it’s another to make them dance.

Nobody can say that GOTG’s soundtrack was wildly anticipated, but as an interesting afterthought, one really has to ask what kinds of wacky insanity could sing on top of rolls of film jacked with…well, wacky insanity. Are we talking goofball satire like Afroman’s “Because I Got High?” Nope – surprisingly the music is the only part of this plan that is played straight. And that’s a pretty good idea.

Beginning with the no-brainer by Blue Swede, here’s their set list of unusually normal music:

1. Blue Swede – Hooked on a Feeling
2. Raspberries – Go All the Way
3. Norman Greenbaum – Spirit in the Sky
4. David Bowie – Moonage Daydream
5. Elvin Bishop – Fooled Around and Fell in Love
6. 10Cc – I’m Not in Love
7. Jackson 5 – I Want You Back
8. Redbone – Come and Get Your Love
9. The Runaways – Cherry Bomb
10. Rupert Holmes – Escape (the Pina Colada Song)
11. The Five Stairsteps – O-O-H Child
12. Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell – Ain’t No Mountain High Enough

Notice how there’s a strange amount of love songs in that group? Is Peter Quill really rocking “Escape” in his earholes while stealing galactic valuables across space? Hell, I like to think so! That’s awesome all by itself, but you also have to wonder if the trailer-insinuated love story between Quill and Gamora is a bigger part of the story than just your garden variety interstellar theft, jailbreaking, saving the universe doldrums.

But let’s face it, the sweetest part of the deal is the cover. Dressed up like one of my old mixtapes from 1983, it looks like every song on this thing was recording right off the radio because that’s how most of us had to do it 30 years ago. And if it’s not complete with the DJ cutting in at the end of every other song, messing up the whole damn record, I’m gonna be pissed.

UPDATE: You can listen to the track list NOW.

MTV went ahead and made this Spotify playlist embedded below. Check it out.
