The sad and untimely death of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman hit show business hard last weekend, but it left a couple of logistical conundrums in its wake, like one final, yet reportedly key scene in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, involving Hoffman’s character. But in an interesting turn of events, we apparently have the technology to duplicate our dear departed actors digitally, and insert him into the live-action scene. This, rumor has it, is the way that Hoffman will be able to finish The Hunger Games postmortem.

“These days the technology of using someone’s likeness is a whole lot easier to do,” according to Rob Legato, a special effects supervisor, who talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the subject on Monday. “I won’t say you could generate a Philip Seymour Hoffman with all the acting ability, but you could certainly replicate him for a shot or two.”

According to the studio, Lionsgate, Hoffman had seven days of shooting left on Mockingjay, in which he plays Plutarch Heavensbee, the gamesmaster for the 75th Hunger Games. Like many characters, Heavensbee plays a larger role in the final two parts of The Hunger Games, which are currently in the process of being filmed. Part 1 is scheduled for release this coming fall, and Part 2 is scheduled for release in 2015.
