When they first announced the film, before all of these crazy rumors and even crazier castings, the Man of Steel sequel was teased by a classic monologue from The Dark Knight Returns. Instantly, fans ran wild with speculation on just why was this line in particular was chosen from Batman’s many encounters with Superman, and what this would mean for the movie. It’s been more distant from our minds as of late, as we’re all still in the wake of Jesse Eisenberg being announced as Lex Luthor, but Zack Snyder has finally given us some insight on just what relation TDKR will have to Batman Vs. Superman.

It’s something that I’ve been keeping in the back of my head, slowly brushing over it every time I hear something new about Batman Vs. Superman, but it’s been easily lost in the shuffle. Just how does that line play in, and what resemblance will the comic have to the movie? According to Zach Snyder, quite a bit.

The comic book will influence the history of Batman vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work.

We’ve heard a lot about how we’re getting an older, more worn Batman in this version, so it does seem like The Dark Knight Returns would be a good place to draw from to achieve that effect. In the effort to reach this goal, it seems, is how they found their notorious casting choice for Bruce Wayne.

Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry in the role of Superman. He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world.

I was as turned off by the idea of Batfleck as anyone else was, but as I hear more about the vision behind it, I feel like I’m coming around to it. It calms my mind to think that, if this movie doesn’t shock everyone by being a fantastic representation of these characters that we love, it’s going to be an absolute failure, which will hopefully lead to Ben Affleck never going anywhere near a superhero costume ever again.

Are you starting to understand the direction behind some of these bizarre castings, as Snyder fills us in on his vision? Do you still not see Batfleck as being the right choice in this TDKR influence universe that Goyer and Snyder are creating? Let us know!
