The awards season is a great time to see some of the behind the scenes work that goes into the movies we love. ILM and other visual effects companies often release visual effects reels to the awards voting community to show exactly how much their work impacted the overall movie. We’ve got three visual effects reels for Pacific Rim and Star Trek into Darkness from ILM for your viewing entertainment.Let’s start off with Pacific Rim:

For over 2 years the team at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco, Singapore and Vancouver worked tirelessly to bring Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction epic “Pacific Rim” to life. This reel represents a taste of the visual effects work the team was tasked with in creating everything from monstrous Kaiju to the man-made Jaegers and the environments they are seen in.

Next we’ve got two reels from Star Trek into Darkness. The movie contained over 1600 visual effects created by Industrial Light & Magic, Pixomondo, Atomic Fiction and Kelvin Optical Inc.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” contains over 1600 visual effects shots, created by Industrial Light & Magic, Pixomondo, Atomic Fiction and Kelvin Optical Inc. In this reel, we’ll take a look at ILM’s work which encompassed virtually every tool and discipline in our effects arsenal.

Here’s the opening scene breakdown.

I love watching these Effects Breakdown Videos. It always blows my mind how little the actors usually have to work with when filming a scene. Making those effects seamlessly fit into the movie without those same effects clobbering you over the head and taking you out of the movie is a real talent.

One of my favorite effects reels is from Game of Thrones Season 2.
