We thought it would never happen. But we were wrong. After months of speculation, weird rumors, weirder casting, and other bumps along the way, the fifth Terminator movie, Terminator: Genesis, began shooting yesterday with an eye not just on a summer 2015 release date, but to be successful enough to kick off a whole new trilogy of films. There’s a lot invested in the project, not just in terms of literal money, but in terms of this being a huge franchise that could make vast sums of money in a way that has yet to be exploited.

The next phase of the Terminator franchise began yesterday with the above picture and the following words:

::SKYNET preparation routines complete.
::Initialization sequence complete.
::Reboot initiating in 03m00s.

Message received. Not only has shooting began, but it is a “reboot.” There’s been a lot of bizarre rumors about this film, but the consensus has always been it’s a reboot of some description, something that would tie together the lore of all four previous Terminator films and package it together to veer off into some (reportedly) fantastic new direction. Of course, we’ve been promised that before, so we’ll reserve the right to remain skeptical till the end credits roll on the movie.

Terminator: Genesis features the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the franchise that made him an international super star, with franchise newcomers Emilia Clarke (Sarah Connor) and Jai Courtney (Kyle Reese) co-starring. Director Alan Taylor, of course, last made the Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World, and it seems that he brought that movies director of photography, Kramer Morgenthau, over to Terminator with him. So if nothing else, the film will definitely look good.

We’ll have updates from the film shoot as they become available, the film itself will be in theaters everywhere on July 1, 2015.
