It can be said, as a gross generalization, that the Star Wars film universe hasn’t quite lived up the original trilogy. The prequels, though arguably underappreciated, have been universally crapped on. Largely due to midichlorians, Jar Jar Binks, Hayden Christensen and a slew of other complaints.  10 years later, the Star Wars franchise came back in a big way with last years’ release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While this new foray into the Star Wars universe saw – much to the delight of fans – the return of Legacy characters like Han, Chewie, Leia and Luke the film it… well… didn’t quite deliver. Fans and critics were quick to lament it for being too much a carbon copy of Star Wars: A New Hope.

Damn. Star Wars fans are a hard bunch to please, aren’t they?  What do Star Wars fans want? What will make ’em happy? Well, according to a new online petition, it seems fans know exactly what they want.

Recently, a trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s newest expansion pack Knights of the Eternal Throne hit the interwebz. The cinematic trailer showed a story and stunning visuals way better and beyond anything in the prequels or current films. If you haven’t seen it, take a moment and watch the 6-minute trailer below. It is truly is stunning. Go ahead. We’ll wait.

That Cinematic from Bioware shows what could be an amazing film franchise. Fans everywhere are in agreement. So much so that a Change.Org petition has been started, asking that Disney and Lucasfilm turn Star Wars: The Old Republic into a TV series on Netflix.

Here’s what the Star Wars The Old Republic TV series petition says (via

It’s no surprise to anyone that the Star Wars franchise has experienced a massive resurgence lately, with The Force Awakens released last year and this year with the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, it’s about time that the stories from over 3,000 years before the Battle of Yavin be told to both new and old fans of the franchise.

The Knights of the Republic series of games as well as the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic serve as the main vehicles to tell stories of characters such as Darth Revan, Darth Malak, Bastila Shan, Darth Traya, Meetra Surik, Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, and the list goes on. The popularity of this era in Star Wars history is felt throughout the fanbase, and I feel it would do a massive disservice to us if these stories weren’t told.

Why Netflix was chosen was because of the wealth of great content they have produced over the years, such as Narcos, House of Cards, and especially everything that Marvel has done and is still currently working on. Not only that, but Netflix can serve as a platform to tell these stories as they were meant to be portrayed: dark, foreboding, and a touch on the mature side. This can also give us fans our healthy dose of Star Wars while we’re waiting on the new movies or the new season of Star Wars Rebels.

The Old Republic era is a pivotal point in the Star Wars timeline because that’s where everything changed, from the Jedi Civil War and the fall of Revan, the First Jedi Purge, and an omnipresent darkness that not only watched the chaos from afar but also kick-started the downfall. Our fanbase would love to see this on Netflix, and I feel that you would enjoy creating and adapting these stories as much as we would enjoy watching them.

Online petitions don’t usually amount to anything other than a small group of people/fans (small, in the grand scheme of things) makin’ a little noise, of which  goes unheard and uncared for by Studios. So this latest Change.Org petition is just another drop in the pan. However, there have been talks with ABC and LucasFilm about a new Star Wars TV series. What that is and what they have planned is undefined. Perhaps Disney/Lucasfilm would see something like this, if really got big enough, and consider basing a series on The Old Republic, which is something a lot of fans desperately wantThen again, none of TOR it is considered canon. Only the original trilogy, the prequels, Clone Wars animated series, Star Wars Rebels and the new slate of films are canonized. Of course, Disney could just as easily usher it back it. And why shouldn’t they? The Old Republic is so lush with history and great characters that are ripe for adaptation. Look at Knights of the Eternal Throne, the potential is right there. So good.

While this Change.Org petition will have little to no impact on Disney/Lucas Film future decisions, it’s at least nice to see fans talking positive about Star Wars again.
