The struggle to get an adaptation of American Gods onto the small screen has been an annoying one for fans. Just a few weeks ago we received the news that HBO had decided to dump the project, leaving one of Neil Gaiman’s most beloved novels in limbo. Now, we have a buttload of good news for fans of American Gods. Not only is the television show getting the green light, it’s also going to be put together by some truly brilliant people. Scroll on for all the delicious details.

First and foremost, the television station that fans may send their “Thank You” emails to is Starz. They announced today in an official press release that American Gods was indeed going to be made. According to Starz Managing Director Carmi Zlotnik:

“‘American Gods’ is a project that deserves to be made. With our partners at FremantleMedia and with Bryan, Michael and Neil, we believe we can create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans and viewers.”

So, yes folks, Hollywood does occasionally do something right. They’ve decided that Gaiman’s novel is worth bringing to the public and, better yet, they’re a network that will allow the book to be adapted with all the darkness and adult content that the original story contains.

But wait! There’s even more good news!

The pilot script for the series will be penned by none-other-than Bryan Fuller and Michael Green. Both members of this team worked on Heroes back in the day and any television watcher worth his salt will know Fuller’s name from such amazing programs as Hannibal and Pushing Daisies. In addition, these two will also be acting as executive producers and showrunners for American Gods.

When asked, Fuller had a few words to share about his involvement in American Gods:

“Neil Gaiman has created the holiest of holy toy boxes with ‘American Gods’ and filled it with all manner of magical thing, born of new gods and old. Michael Green and I are thrilled to crack this toy box wide open and unleash the fantastical titans of heaven and earth and Neil’s vividly prolific imagination.”

Still not had your share of good news? Well check this out – Neil Gaiman will also be producing. That’s right, they’re letting the man himself oversee the show. Gaiman’s involvement will mean that he has a say in how the series is put together, so we need not fear that American Gods will be pillaged and butchered for the sake of profit.

And now, I leave you with this final word from Gaiman:

“When you create something like ‘American Gods,’ which attracts fans and obsessives and people who tattoo quotes from it on themselves or each other, and who all, tattooed or not, just care about it deeply, it’s really important to pick your team carefully: you don’t want to let the fans down, or the people who care and have been casting it online since the dawn of recorded history. What I love most about the team who I trust to take it out to the world, is that they are the same kind of fanatics that ’American Gods’ has attracted since the start. I haven’t actually checked Bryan Fuller or Michael Green for quote tattoos, but I would not be surprised if they have them. The people at Fremantle are the kinds of people who have copies of ‘American Gods in the bottom of their backpacks after going around the world, and who press them on their friends. And the team at Starz have been quite certain that they wanted to give Shadow, Wednesday and Laura a home since they first heard that the book was out there. I can’t wait to see what they do to bring the story to the widest possible audience able to cope with it.”

So prepare for what should be a brilliant adaptation of an already brilliant novel. So far there’s no word on when they expect to have this thing up and rolling, but rest assured that we’ll let you all know as soon as we find out.
