Sony tried to reintroduce The Ghostbusters with the all-female lead reboot in 2016. It came. It saw. It got its asked kicked. The film got panned by critics and audiences alike (and that’s putting it gently). Regardless of the specious online hate for it, and whatever online trolls would have you believe, the film didn’t perform that badly at the the Box Office (hey, some people liked it. Particularly younger audiences). The reboot brought in $229 million worldwide against a production budget of $144 million. It wasn’t the sure-fire runaway hit that Sony thought it would be but it wasn’t a dramatic loss either. Still, the less than stellar numbers did put the viability of the brand in question. Will there be a sequel? What’s next for the brand?

Creator and custodian Ivan Reitman seems to be all puppies and rainbows when it comes to the future of Ghostbusters. According to him, there is action on an animated movie, and there are multiple live-action films in development, as well as some development in VR gaming.

Reitman spoke to io9 about the future of Ghostbusters and all the different projects that are being lined up, stating:

“We jumped into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action films. I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.”

In June of 2016, Sony had announced a new Ghostbusters animated TV series to hit in 2018, titled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force. It was reported the new series would be set in the year 2050 — decades after the events of the old Ghostbusters or the new one.

No word yet, if the animated movie has anything to do with the new confirmed series, the original film, the reboot, or if it will be it’s own thing. The goal is to see the animated Ghostbusters movie in theaters in either 2019 or 2020 but “It depends on on how fast we can get it all together” said Reitman, adding “It’s hard to make an animated film.”

As for the Ghostbusters virtual reality experience, that is currently launching on PlayStation with Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring, which lets players explore Ghostbusters HQ and take on Slimer. Reitman talked about the many possibilities opened up by VR:

“I think Ghostbusters is this wonderful [intellectual property] because it has so many storytelling opportunities. And it’s a particularly good one for VR.”

As for the proposed new set of films? Reitman was rather tight lipped on the subject but seems pretty clear that animated efforts are coming before any more live-action treatments.

Fans love Ghostbusters, in general, and want the ride to continue. It could have continued… but Paul Feig’s reboot happened (Ignore all the feminism, anti-feminism noise. The cast made no difference, the movie wasn’t very good, period.) and really put a sour note on the franchise. Now, unless something truly convincing comes along tagged under the Ghostbusters license, it just feels like Sony and Co are grasping at nostalgia.

Taking business over art, now that’s the real killer in Hollywood.
