OK. The X-Men: First Class casting has now officially reached the status of “too-many-godamn-characters-in-this-flick”. Lets see, we have James McAvoy as Professor X. Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Nicholas Hoult as Beast. Lucas Till as Havok. Caleb Landry Jones as Banshee. Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. Edi Gathegi as Darwin and Kevin Bacon as a yet to be named villain. Well, now we have another mutant to add to the mix. Onstage today at Movie-Con ((found on ComingSoon), Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Stardust) revealed he will play Azazel, biological father of Nightcrawler. Wow. Nightcrawler’s father, huh? Just how many more characters, that have no relation to Xavier’s first class of mutants can they cram into this flick? (X-Men: First Class is basically the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between young Xavier and Magneto)

Now, I have all the faith in the world for director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) and his writing partner Jane Goldman (Boob Alert check it out), but this is just getting ridiculous. I know I’m being presumptuous. I should wait till I hear more plot details before I get all ranty, but with this many characters how on earth can each of them get enough screen time for us to care about them? I understand this X-Men flick is trying to distinguish itself from previous installments and utilizing a rogues gallery of un-used characters is the best way to do that, but this has the X-Men Origins: Wolverine written all over it.

On a side note: Did anyone else notice the uncanny (pun intended) resemblance Jason Flemyng has to Patrick Swayze?

here’s more on Azazel, for anyone that cares.

The character first appeared in “Uncanny X-Men #428 in a storyline called “The Draco” where we finally learned that Kurt Wagner a.k.a Nightcrawler was the son of the lead of an ancient race of mutants, from biblical times no less, who looked like demons and who could teleport by opening portals into other dimensions. In the comics, Azazel had been banished to the “Brimstone dimension” by angels, but left that dimension to father children, one of them being Nightcrawler.
