By now you’ve seen and heard the news of the series of tornadoes that have struck the town of Joplin, Missouri. With so much devastation in the area there has been a dire need for supplies, support and military aid. Lives have been lost and many people are still left unaccounted for since the first initial tornado touched down, destroying everything in it’s path. For the folks that survived the devastation, the coming days, weeks and months ahead are gonna be beyond tough. One beacon of hope actually comes from a local comic book shop. In addition to being a place of refuge, the shop owners have come up with a unique way to keep kids in high spirits with help from comic book heroes.

Resident comic shop proprietors Jason A. Hurley and his brother Nathan Hurley have been working to serve their community tirelessly since events first unfolded. Their shop, Hurley’s Heroes Comic & Games has become a refuge to the people of Joplin in this time of need. Stocked with bottled water and canned food all week long the brothers, along with customer volunteers, have begun reaching out even further by distributing donated all-ages comics to children that have become displaced by the tornado in area shelters.

From Hurley’s full outreach e-mail:

This is a call to publishers, distributors, stores, anyone who has all ages books they would like to donate.

My name is Jason A. Hurley, my brother and I own a comic shop called Hurley’s Heroes in Joplin, Missouri. This last weekend, Joplin was hit by a deadly tornado that wiped out a huge chunk of town. Several hundred, perhaps even thousands, of families were put out of their homes. Now, hundreds of children are stuck inside huge shelters, and no doubt bored out of their minds. We’ve taken a few books from the store to a shelter nearby, and they were greatly appreciated. I’ve been inspired, and I want to make this effort bigger.

I have plenty of people, mostly my loyal customers, willing to distribute these books far and wide to the various shelters around town. Now, I need books to distribute. If anyone out there has all ages comics that they would be willing to donate to this cause, you can just send them to me, and I’ll get them out to the shelters.

This is a wonderful thing these two brothers and their fellow volunteers are doing for the community and this isn’t even for brownie points. Archaia Comics, artists Skottie Young and Scott Morse and various celebrities have already joined in with both comics and monetary donations. If you would like to donate to the brothers and their cause please send any all age comics you have to the address above and check for updates on the Hurley’s Heroes’ Twitter feed.
