Lawsuit Against Bryan Singer Dropped

Plenty of fans were ecstatic to witness their favorite X-Men on screen again in this year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and rightly so! The movie was a perfect way to reunite the cast of Bryan Singer’s original X-Men series while also maintaining the wonderful cast of the X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class.  Unfortunately, the release of the blockbuster was soiled a bit by accusations of sexual abuse by Singer, the victim being a minor at the time of the alleged abuse.  After a lawsuit was filed against the filmmaker, the future of the X-Men franchise seemed a bit uncertain.  However, it appears that we may see Singer back in that director’s chair for the next X-Men entry, as the lawsuit has been dropped.

The lawsuit filed against Singer by Michael Egan III alleged that the filmmaker abused Egan back in 1999, when Egan was 17 years old.  Singer maintained that he was innocent of the horrible accusations and, in his answer to Egan’s complaint, he made it clear that he wasn’t even in the state of Hawaii (the state in which the abuse allegedly took place) at the time of the alleged abuse.  Singer claimed that he had proof of his whereabouts at the time of the alleged incident and that proof would show he was even in a different country at the time. At the end of July, Egan’s attorneys on the case backed out, supposedly due to Egan’s refusal to settle the case for $100,000. Egan elected to drop the case because he could not find a new attorney to represent him.  A judge in Hawaii allowed the case to be dropped without prejudice, meaning that Egan could file suit again in the future.

These types of cases are never fun to report on, simply because of the potentially damaging facts of the case.  If Singer was guilty of the charges, that means that a prolific filmmaker, a very successful, likable filmmaker at that, preyed on someone who was weaker than himself. If Singer was falsely accused, that means that someone took advantage of Singer’s notoriety and accused him of disgusting actions; accusations that will likely follow Singer in hushed conversations for the rest of his life.

We may never know what really happened and it is unfair to either party to speculate on the guilt of Singer or the legitimacy of the accusations made by Egan.  Right now, it is best to simply be happy that 20th Century Fox stood behind Singer during this time and held onto him for X-Men: Apocalypse.  If it is as good as it should be, Singer will wind up being behind one of the most epic superhero movies of 2016.
