In a Marvel film, you can always count on a few things. It’s going to be entertaining as hell, and there will no doubt be a Stan Lee cameo. Considered the godfather of Marvel (and comic books in general), Stan Lee is responsible for giving us most of the characters we hold dear to our hearts. Although the 94-year-old has since retired from his position at Marvel, he almost always has made cameos in the films based on his properties.

Most consider it a nice way to pay homage to the creator of all the awesome characters Marvel has given us over the years. However, there is also a fan theory that Stan Lee’s cameos are no mere coincidence. Instead, Lee is one of Marvel’s famed cosmic characters hiding in plain sight. Uatu the Watcher is a member of “The Watchers,” an extraterrestrial race that, well, they simply watch. Their primary role is to observe events in a given sector of space and Uatu happens to be charged with watching many of the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many fans thought that Lee was Uatu in a humanoid form.

Apparently, Lee’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 will have him sitting down and talking with a group of Watchers.

When asked during the press rounds for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige was asked about the cameo and what it means for the MCU.

“Yes, we always thought it would be fun. Stan Lee clearly exists, you know, above and apart from the reality of all the films. So the notion that he could be sitting there on a cosmic pit stop during the jump gate sequence in Guardians was something very fun – James had that idea and we shot that cameo and loved it so much, you know, you see it a couple of times in the movie. It wasn’t in for a long time and we put it back in towards the end of the process where he references that time he was a Federal Express agent – we thought it would be fun to put that in there because that really says, so wait a minute, he’s this same character who’s popped up in all these films.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 hit theaters May 5, 2017.
