Mads Mikkelsen is a remarkably accomplished Danish actor, and that’s even before you start talking about his most well-known works in Casino Royale, Hannibal, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Doctor Strange. He’s great, he’s gotten great roles, and that doesn’t happen by accident. Indeed, Mikkelsen, while being a working actor, is also a discerning actor, meaning that he’s not about to take roles that don’t fulfill him. To wit, Mikkelsen just confessed that he walked away from a possible role in Josh Trank‘s Fantastic Four, which makes you wonder if he knew something no one else did till after the film was released.
“I think I walked out on the Fantastic Four [audition],” Mikkelsen told ShortList in a new interview. “I think I actually said, ‘I can’t do it. It’s not about you, I’m sorry, this is wrong.'”
Yikes. So what could they have possibly asked him to do? It must have been pretty terrible if an actor just turns around and walks out of what could have been a great opportunity in a major studio film, right? Mikkelsen’s answer kind of gives us an insight into what it’s like to be an actor in Hollywood amidst the current emphasis on franchise filmmaking.
“I’ve had tons of them [like that],” he explained. “We’ve all been there. We all show up and it’s a little office room with a desk and some books and they want you to do a scene where you have two lines – maybe not even two lines – maybe just ‘Bleurgh!’ or ‘Get back!’ And you’re hiding behind a palm tree that’s not there. It’s like, ‘Guys, couldn’t you have picked a different kind of scene to this? This is [frick]ing mad.’ You feel like an idiot.”
No word on what role Mikkelsen might have been auditioning for, but try not to admit that thoughts of ‘Doom’ didn’t just pop into your head. Maybe next reboot…
Rogue One will be on Blu-ray and DVD on April 4.
