Disney XD has been making our wait for the Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series a little more bearable by releasing the origin stories of the main characters. This past month we have been able to dive deeper into the lives of Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax the Destroyer; and now last but never least: Gamora.

We’ve gathered bits and pieces about Gamora and her past from the Tim Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy film. We know that she’s the last surviving member of her race, a race that was killed off by Thanos, who she was adopted by. We also know that she chose to betray Thanos, a decision that the videos help to justify a bit.  The following is a play by play of the videos, followed by the videos themselves, so if you don’t want any spoilers- skip straight down to the videos!

Gamora’s origin story gives all new meaning to the term “sibling rivalry”. The first of the two-part story shows her, her sister Nebula, and their brother Korath on a mission under Thanos’ orders; the winner of which will earn the status of his Second in Command. Winning entails extracting information from someone Thanos has been seeking. The trio makes it to the temple where the information is to be, trying to slow and/or kill one another along the way, and assume wrongly that the temple is unguarded. They battle a large spider-like robot, (not as a team, mind you, but “every man for himself” style), and Gamora manages to circle around it while slicing through the ice it’s standing on, plunging it into the water. Nebula kicks Gamora in after the robo-spider, and deals Korath a swift kick to the head for his proposal of using teamwork as she sprints away. Gamora re-surfaces from the water, only to be promptly dragged back down by one of the long, spindly, robo-spider legs.

In the second part of the story, video #2, we see Gamora free herself from the spider leg, and swim into a temple where she finds the wizard with the information she needs to find for Thanos. The wizard says he is the last of his species, just like Gamora, and undoes a sort of mental barrier that was being controlled in her brain, hiding her memories. The wizard tells Gamora that the artifact Thanos seeks holds infinite power, and projects a map that would enable Gamora to reach the power first and keep it safe, should she choose to follow that path. There’s an explosion as Korath and Nebula crash their way into the room, and when the dust settles, the wizard is gone and Gamora is holding the artifact. As Nebula and Gamora fight (literally fight) over it, it gets flung in the air. Korath picks it up and is announced the victor by Thanos, meaning he now outranks his sisters. Part 2 ends with the wizard walking up to Star-Lord in what looks to be a bar of some sort, asking if his ship is for hire, holding what appears to be the ancient artifact from earlier and saying he has something far more valuable than units to pay with.

Thus ends the origin stories of the Guardians of the Galaxy! The Star-Lord cameo was a fun little surprise, and now everything is set in place for the series to begin!

The animated Guardians of the Galaxy series premieres September 26th on Disney XD. Vocal talents include Will Friedle (Star-Lord), Trevor Devall (Rocket Raccoon), Kevin Michael Richardson (Groot), Vanessa Marshall (Gamora), David Sobolov (Drax the Destroyer), and James Arnold Taylor (Yondu).
