It was only a few short months ago that Nike released the Nike MAG shoes as worn by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II in a very limited (and pricey run) and then after that news came out that some science nerds were working on’ Quantum Locking‘, that is the technology to make something hover.

You can see where this is going can’t you.

A full 3 years early on the whole 2015 mark from the movie and just in time for Christmas, Mattel announced at the New York Toy Fair over the weekend that that will be releasing a limited run of actually and totally for realsies honest to goodness hoverbaords! (sorta)

Back to the Future Hover Board: Finally! This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the BTTF 2 and BTTF 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually “hover” – check back in 2015 for that feature). We’ll be taking orders for it March 1 – March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don’t receive the minimum orders, won’t go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month. (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)

So, they don’t actually hover which is kind of a bummer, but the reference to it being a ‘high-cost item’ makes me think it should be a high quality replica rather than a toy, hopefully one that that is a little easier on the bank account than the afore mentioned Nike Air MAGS.

It’s 2012, our shoes don’t have power laces, coat can’t dry clean itself, our hoverboards don’t hover and, there isn’t a Mr. Fusion to be found. Come on 2015, haul ass.
