Way back in 1989, when Jack Nicholson was cast as The Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman, the idea of a seriously huge Hollywood star playing a comic book villain in some silly comic book movie seemed a bit out there. Of course, it had been done before. Marlon Brando played Jor-El in Superman the Movie, which also featured another established star, Gene Hackman, as Lex Luthor, but Nicholson was something else altogether: Hollywood royalty. Now it’s not so uncommon. You had Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and up next you’ll have Michael Douglas in Ant-Man. But is the comic book movie business perhaps due for a McConaissance? According to the actor, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

In an interview Variety during the Cannes film festival, Matthew McConaughey revealed that he has been looking at scripts from Marvel Studios. And DC Entertainment.

“I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were,” he said. “Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it.”

Understandable. If you want a big payday by taking a big studio picture your choice pretty much comes down to Marvel or DC these days (and maybe Star Wars). McConaughey tried to build a career out of starring in Hollywood hogwash as a handsome overgrown man-child in a series of romantic-comedies, but he left that behind though to embrace dramatically more enriching work in projects like The Dallas Buyer’s Club and True Detective. In other words, McConaughey’s looking for more than a nice payday and getting to wear a cool super-suit.

“It’s very simple for me. I look at the script. Is the opportunity exciting?” McConaughey explained. “Is the money that comes with it exciting? Sure. Is it the possibility of going, ‘Hey you can get on a train and it can be a franchise and you could do 3, 4, 5, and have a great time as some kind of superhero or anti-hero.’

“But I would also look at something like that and say, ‘Hey, in success that means you are on the train for a while,'” he added. “Contractually, you’re going to return to the character over and over. It’s something I asked myself is it something I’d want to return to. Would I be excited to go back and put the shoes on the character again? Going and doing the press tour with that group of people again? I always ask myself those questions again. It starts with the story and character.”

The real tantalizing question now is what do the movie gods have in mind for McConaughey? Who could he play in either the Marvel or DC Comics universe? From the way he described it, it sounds like both studios have been trying to entice him for a while, meaning that McConaughey’s been looked at for Marvel and DC projects already made. Who were they looking at McConaughey for? Who are they looking at him for now? The actor himself was pretty tight-lipped so he’s concerned about ticking someone off and not getting some kind of future work. I guess we’ll see if the stars align in his favor.

McConaughey will next be seen in the suicide drama The Sea of Trees with Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe.
