Season 2

Netflix really knocked it out of the park with Stranger Things. With little marketing efforts the show was released on the streaming service this July and by the end of the weekend was the talk of the town! The nostalgia-driven 1980’s centered supernatural show captivated audiences. By the time everyone finished the final episode, fans were immediately demanding the show be renewed for a second season. The creators, The Duffer Brothers stated that they had many plans for a forthcoming season if Netflix decided to renew the show. Earlier today we received notification that the show has been renewed for a second season. They even released a teaser trailer.

Continuing how the previous season’s trailer was, they also forecasted the second season by showing what all the second season episode titles would be.

  1. Madmax
  2. The Boy Who Came Back To Life
  3. The Pumpkin Patch
  4. The Palace
  5. The Storm
  6. The Pollywog
  7. The Secret Cabin
  8. The Brain
  9. The Lost Brother

But what do these titles mean? The Duffer Brothers spoke a little bit about the second season and here were some of the findings.

We Will See More of the “Upside Down”

The final episode had us finally visit the alternate dimension coined the “Upside Down” where they finally rescued Will from the lair of The Monster AKA the Gormogon. Not much is really known about that realm and season two promises to learn more about it. Perhaps we can learn more about the story of the Gormogon.

“We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end. So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.”

New and Returning Characters

Expect some of the characters to return for the second season. Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Hopper (David Harbour) are expected to return for the second season. However, the Duffer Brothers were quiet as to if everyone’s favorite telekinetic superhero Eleven will return. The final episode forecasted that she is still alive so it would be surprising if she didn’t return. The Duffer Brothers also said that we can expect up to four new characters to join the second season. With one of the episodes being titled “The Lost Brother,” we know we’ll be meeting someone new.

The Date and the Setting

A little bit of time will have passed. The first season happened in November 1983, the second season will pick up in 1984. Originally the idea was to make the show more like an anthology and have the second season have a time jump to perhaps the 1990s, but they decided against that because they feel they have much more story to tell within the 1980s. The show will also be leaving the fictitious town of Hawkins, Indiana. The first scene will not be in Hawkins as the world on that show will be larger.

James Cameron Influence

Referencing the second season as a sequel, you can’t help but think about James Cameron whose two sequels (Aliens and T2: Judgement Day) surpassed their original films. The Duffer Brothers stated that they will be taking inspiration from Cameron.

“I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different. There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”

All of this sounds awesome. Now that we know how great the Duffer Brother are and what they are capable of, they know expectations will be high for the second season. Hopefully, Stranger Things season two will be able to live up to the hype, because the first season was exceptional.
